When figuring out the amount of space needed for your hammock, there are two important numbers to consider: hanging distance (length) and hanging height. You will have different length and height requirements depending on if you have a classic hammock or spreaderbar hammock.

Calculating space for you classic hammock (no spreader bar)

Unsure if you have enough length or height? The recommended minimum hanging distance for your classic hammock will be 90% of itā€™s total length (total length ā€“ 10%).

For example: If your hammock is three meters long, the minimum required distance is 270 cm.

Minimum required distance for Brisa, Modesta, Flora and Bossanova hammocks:

Size Mindestabstand
Single 270 cm
Double 310 cm
Kingsize 360 cm

To meet the minimum required suspension height for a classic hammock, the distance from the center of the hammock to the tree should be the same as the distance from the ground to the suspension point (where your hammock hangs from). For example, if your hammock is centered and there are four meters distance (length) between the suspension points, the suspension points should be at a minimum height of two meters.

Calculating space for spreader bar hammocks

To meet the minimum recommended hanging distance needed for a spreader bar hammock, the recommended minimum distance between the suspension points should be the same as the length of the hammock. For example, if your spreader bar hammock is three meters long, there should be three meters between the suspension points.

Compared to a classic hammock style, a spreader bar hammock needs more tension. Depending on the product, the minimum recommended hanging height should be about one third (for Alisio) or one quarter (for Alabama) of the hanging distance.

Depending on your suspension set choice you can hang your hammock from:

  • Two trees
  • Walls*
  • Posts
  • Beams
  • Two points on the ceiling*
  • A hammock stand

*Mounting from walls or the ceiling requires solid masonry or drywall with a wooden substructure (studs).

You also have the option of combining different mounting surfaces, for example hanging your hammock between a tree and a post. Regardless of where you choose to hang your hammock, you should always check the load-bearing capacity. If you are unsure, please consult a qualified professional.

Hammock stands and suspension sets offer different advantages depending on your needs.

LA SIESTA suspension sets are excellent options for permanently or temporarily hanging your hammock from ceilings, posts, trees, or beams.

We recommend suspension sets if:

  • You are looking for a space saving option
  • You have an indoor/outdoor location to install/use a suspension set (tree, post, beam, appropriate load-bearing wall or ceiling types)
  • You are looking for a suspension option to blend in with your settings

LA SIESTA hammock stands provide flexible indoor or outdoor options regardless of load bearing suspension and can really open up your hammocking options.

We recommend a hammock stand if:

  • You don't have any available load-bearing locations (walls, trees, ect.) at your disposal
  • You prefer to hang your hammock indoors but can't drill into the ceiling or wall
  • You are looking for a flexible option to move your hammock around as needed

Before you start hanging your hammock, be sure that the trees you want to hang the hammock from are weight bearing. If you are unsure, please consult a qualified professional.

Calculating space for a classic hammock (without spreader bar)

The recommended minimum hanging distance for your classic hammock will be 90% of itā€™s total length (total length ā€“ 10%).

For example: If your hammock is three meters long, the minimum required distance between trees is 270 cm.

Size Minimum Distance
Single 270 cm
Double 310 cm
Kingsize 360 cm

To meet the recommended suspension height, the distance from the center of the hammock to the tree should be the same as the distance from the ground to the suspension point (where your hammock hangs from).

For example, if the hammock is centered and there are four meters distance (length) between the suspension points, the suspension points should be at a minimum height of two meters.

Calculating space for spreader bar hammocks

For spreader bar hammocks it is even easier to calculate the space you will need. The required distance between trees is equal to the hammockā€˜s total length.

Because spreader bar hammocks require more tension than classic hammocks, the recommended minimum hanging height is one third (for Alisio) or one quarter (Alabama) of the hanging distance:

Hanging your hammcock with the TreeMount suspension set

Setting up your hammock is quick and easy with the TreeMount suspension set. The TreeMount suspension set contains:

  •     2x tree-friendly harnesses
  •     2x resistance ropes
  •     2x SmartHooks for adjusting the rope length

To setup the suspension straps, first tie to the rope to the tree harness and then loop the harness around the tree trunk. Depending on the width of the trunk, the straps can also be wrapped several times.

Pull the looped rope end through the hammock suspension loop (end of your hammock) and hook the looped end rope onto the SmartHook

Your hammock should now hooked into the TreeMount. The height/tension of the hammock can be adjusted by sliding the SmartHook up or down the rope.  Repeat all steps on the other side.

You can find more information in our product advisor.

You have the option to hang your hammock between two walls, between a wall and ceiling, or between two points on the ceiling. First, you should make sure that the walls or ceilings you choose are load-bearing. If they are drywall surfaces you will need to find the wall studs before installing.

Calculating space for classic hammocks

For a classic hammock without a spreader bar, the recommended minimum hanging distance for your classic hammock will be 90% of itā€™s total length (total length ā€“ 10%).

For example: If your hammock is three meters long, the minimum required distance between walls is 270 cm.

Size Minimum Distance
Single 270 cm
Double 310 cm
Kingsize 360 cm

We recommend that the distance from the center of the hammock to the wall/ceiling should be the same as the distance from the ground to the suspension point (where the hammock hangs from). For example, if your hammock is centered and there are four meters (13ā€˜1ā€œ) between the suspension points, the suspension points should be at a minimum height of two meters (6ā€˜7ā€œ).

Calculating space for spreader bar hammocks

For a hammock with a spreader bar, unlike the classic hammock style, the recommended minimum distance between suspension points is equal to the hammockā€˜s total length.

Depending on the product, the recommended minimum hanging height should be equal to one third (for Alisio) or one quarter (for Alabama) of the hanging distance:

Suspension with the CasaMount mounting set

The CasaMount mounting set is ideal for wall or ceiling mounting for your hammock.

It contains:

  • 2x MultiSpot wall or ceiling hooks
  • 4x screws
  • 4x dowels (anchors)
  • 2x resistance ropes
  • 2x SmartHooks
  • 1x Manual with paper template

MultiSpot wall or ceiling hooks are installed using the provided screws. For mounting on solid masonry, the included dowels (anchors) should be used. Be sure your MultiSpot does not pull away from the ceiling and is securely fastened.

The included ropes are tied as a loop on one end and hooked onto the Multispot. The SmartHook is threaded through the other rope end, and a final loop is tied at the open end of the rope.

Thread the looped rope end through the hammock suspension loop (end of your hammock) and hook the looped end rope onto the SmartHook.

This allows you to adjust the suspension height and length in the last step with a few simple steps. In addition, you can take the hammock off and hang it up again at any time by simply removing it from the hook.

You can find more information in our product advisor.

Before you hang your hammock between two beams or posts, you should make sure that they are stable and load-bearing. If you are unsure, please consult a qualified professional.

Calculating space for classic hammocks from posts or beams

For a classic hammock without a spreader bar, the recommended minimum hanging distance between beams or posts for your classic hammock will be 90 % of itā€™s total length (total length ā€“ 10%).

For example: If your hammock is three meters long, the minimum required distance between beams or posts is 270 cm.

To meet the minimum required suspension height for a classic hammock, the distance from the center of the hammock to the beam or post should be the same as the distance from the ground to the suspension point (where your hammock hangs from).

For example, if your hammock is centered and there are four meters distance (length) between the suspension points, the suspension points should be at a minimum height of two meters.

Calculating space for spreader bar hammocks from posts or beams

To meet the minimum recommended hanging distance needed for a spreader bar hammock, the recommended minimum distance between beams or posts should be the same as the length of the hammock.

For example, if your spreader bar hammock is three meters long, there should be three meters between the beams or posts.

Depending on the product, the minimum recommended hanging height should be about one third (for Alisio) or one quarter (for Alabama) of the hanging distance.

CasaMount suspension set for posts or beams

For mounting your hammock on angular beams, we have developed the CasaMount set which includes, among other things, two MultiSpot suspension hooks that are screwed to the beams or posts. The included ropes are hooked into the Multispot hooks. The ropes are then connected to the hammock and hooked into the SmartHook, which can also be used to adjust the suspension height and length in no time at all.

Hammocking with the TreeMount suspension set

If you want to attach your hammock to round beams or posts, we recommend the TreeMount suspension set. The TreeMount suspension set contains:

  • 2x tree-friendly harnesses
  • 2x resistance ropes
  • 2x SmartHooks for adjusting the rope length

The tree-friendly harnesses are tied to the ropes then looped around the beams or posts.

The next step is to thread the ropes into the SmartHook hooks and connect them to the hammock via another loop.

Finally, the ropes are hooked into the SmartHook, which can be used to easily adjust the suspension height. In addition, it offers the possibility to quickly unhook and rehook the hammock.

To determine if you have enough room for your hammock chair needs, you should consider two different factors ā€“ distance and height:

First, make sure there is enough distance between where your hammock chair will hang and surrounding walls, furniture, and objects.

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum distance
Basic 65 cm
Comfort 75 cm
Kingsize 90 cm

Second, make sure that the suspension element to which you want to attach your hammock chair (wall, beam, pole, branch, ect.) meets the recommended minimum height:

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum height
Basic 200 cm
Comfort 210 cm
Kingsize 220 cm

If you have the required minimum distance and height, you have enough space to hang your hammock chair.

You can hang your hammock chair from:

  • Weight-bearing branches
  • Round or square beams*
  • Ceilings or sloping roofs*
  • Hammock chair stands

* When attaching to the ceiling or beams, make sure that it is solid masonry or drywall with a wooden substructure (studs). Also note the angle of the roof surface should not exceed 45Ā°.

Regardless of where you choose to hang your hanging chair from, please make sure it is load-bearing. If you are unsure, please consult a qualified specialist.

Whether a hammock chair stand or suspension set is better choice for you will depend on your needs.

We recommend suspension sets if:

  • You are looking for a space saving option
  • You have an indoor/outdoor location to install/use a suspension set (tree, post, beam, appropriate load-bearing wall or ceiling types)
  • You are looking for a suspension option to blend in with your settings

LA SIESTA hammock chair stands provide flexible indoor or outdoor options regardless of load bearing suspension and can really open up your options.

We recommend a hammock chair stand if:

  • You don't have any available load-bearing locations (walls, trees, ect.) at your disposal
  • You prefer to hang your hammock chair indoors but can't drill into the ceiling or wall
  • You are looking for a flexible option to move your hammock chair around as needed

To hang your hammock chair from the ceiling, first make sure the ceiling is load-bearing. If you are unsure, please consult a professional for advice.

Calculating space for your hammock chair

Once the ceiling is confirmed as weight-bearing, next is to determine how much space you will need for your hammock chair. It is important to make sure that the spreader bar of your hammock chair will not bump into surrounding furniture, walls, or objects.

We recommend the following minimum distances:

DarĆ¼ber hinaus sollte die Decke eine gewisse Mindesthƶhe erfĆ¼llen ā€“ je nach GrĆ¶ĆŸe deines HƤngesessels empfehlen sich mindestens 200 cm (Basic), 210 cm (Comfort) oder 220 cm (Kingsize).

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum distance
Basic 65 cm
Comfort  75 cm
Kingsize 90 cm

In addition, the ceiling should meet a certain minimum height. Depending on the size of your hanging chair, we recommend the following minimum heights:

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum height
Basic 200 cm
Comfort 210 cm
Kingsize 220 cm

You should also plan for a distance of about 30 cm between the bottom of your hammock chair bed and the floor. This protects your hammock chair from abrasion and early wear and tear.

Hanging your hammock chair with the CasaMount suspension set

For hanging your hammock chair from the ceiling, we recommend the LA SIESTA CasaMount suspension set for hammock chairs.

The  CasaMount suspension set set consists of:

  • 1x MultiSpot ceiling hook
  • 4x Screws and dowels
  • 1x Suspension rope
  • 1x SmartHook hook
  • 1x Manual and paper template

If your ceiling is solid masonry or drywall, the MultiSpot is attached to the ceiling with four screws for optimal weight distribution.

The provided rope is then hooked into the MultiSpot with a loop. Tie another loop at the open end of the rope, pass it through the swivel of the hammock chair and hook it into the SmartHook. The SmartHook can also be used to adjust the suspension height.

You can find more information in our product advisor.

Before you hang your hanging chair from a beam, please be sure that the beam is weight-bearing.

Calculating space for your hammock chair

The TreeMount suspension set includes:

  • tree-friendly harness
  • 1x resistance rope
  • 1x SmartHook for adjusting the rope length

The strap is first tied to the rope and then wrapped around the beam. The other end of the rope is tied into a loop and hooked into the SmartHook, which is used to adjust the suspension height.

Before hanging your hammock chair from a tree, be sure the branch is load-bearing. If you are unsure, please consult a professional for advice.

Calculating space for your hammock chair

Once you have confirmed the branch is load-bearing, check whether there is enough space for your hammock chair to swing freely. Depending on the size of your hammock chair, we recommend the following minimum distances from the suspension to the tree trunk and any surrounding object:

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum distance
Basic 200 cm
Comfort 210 cm
Kingsize 220 cm

We also recommend that the branch should be the following minimum height:

Hammock chair size Recommended minimum height

A Joki hanging nest needs enough space to ensure it doesn't bump into furniture, walls or other objects while in use. We recommend the following minimum distances to any surrounding object:

Also be sure that the ceiling height is within our recommended height ranges:

Joki size Ceiling height
Joki 2-4 m
Joki Air 2.2-4.2 m

You can hang a Joki hanging nest for kids from the ceiling, a sloping roof or a square beam. If you choose a ceiling or sloping roof, you should make sure that it is solid masonry or drywall with wooden substructure (studs).

Please note the angle of the roof surface should not exceed 45Ā° so that the rope loop does not come into contact with the lowest screw.

For mounting on square beams as well as on the ceiling, you can use the CasaMount suspension that comes included with every LA SIESTA hanging nest. For mounting on branches or round beams, we recommend the TreeMount suspension set for hammock chairs, which is available for purchase separately in the LA SIESTA online store.

Calculating space for your Joki hanging nest

Before you install your Joki hanging nest, you should make sure that the hanging nest wonā€˜t bump into surrounding walls, furniture or objects while swinging.

Also be sure that your suspension point is within the recommended height ranges:

Joki size Ceiling height
Joki 2-4 m
Joki Air 2.2 - 4.2 m

Suspension with the mounting set

Once you confirm the recommended space requirements, the Joki hanging nest for children can be installed with the included CasaMount suspension set just for Joki.

This includes:

  • 1x MultiSpot ceiling hook
  • 1x Three-meter rope
  • 4x Screws and dowels (anchors)
  • 1x Patented SmartSwivel swivel
  • 1x Manual and paper template

The first step is to install the MultiSpot. For this purpose, four holes must first be drilled and the included dowels (anchors) inserted if the attachment is to solid masonry. If it is suspended from a wooden beam, only the screws are required (no anchors needed).

Once the MultiSpot is installed, the rope can be hooked into the ceiling hook with a loop and threaded into the swivel.

Finally, you should make sure that your child can comfortably touch the floor with their feet when sitting in their Joki hanging nest, but that the bottom of the Joki does not touch the floor. If you need to adjust the height of your Joki you can use the integrated SmartSwivel.
